Where is the United States Constitution?

Have you ever wondered where the United States constitution is stored? Maybe you saw a movie with Kevin Costner where he tries to be like Indiana Jones so he steals it from a highly fortified vault. Well while it is stored in a vault in the National Archives and Records Administration, it is not quite the way it was in that movie.

Of course this isn’t your average every day document. So document storage experts have gotten involved along the way to make sure this precious piece of paper will last forever. Even though a document imaging service or two have certainly stored it for all of posterity with pictures, it is important that we take care of the original.

But what if something did happen to the original constitution? What if the building burned down or something? Here is something that most Americans don’t know. The one we have stored in the vault in Washington DC in the National Archives and Records Administration isn’t the only copy! There are 20 known copies that date back to the original constitutional convention. These copies are for the most part held in collections owned by universities, state governments and even some in the hands of private collections.

Full-Service Dog Grooming vs. Do It Yourself

dog groomingFor many dogs, getting groomed is just a necessity.  For instance, for a Bernese mountain dog, getting clipped in the summer can make them a whole lot more comfortable.  Some dogs are also more prone to getting dirty or smelly than other breeds.  Also, many people like to have their fancy breeds — such as a Cavalier King Charles spaniel – groomed in order to keep them looking as pretty as possible.  And then of course there are the poodles, which don’t shed but need to be groomed and clipped regularly so that they don’t look too poofy.

But the question is, should you have them groomed by a full sevice place, or take your dogs to one of those do-it-yourself places?

The advantage of the do-it-yourself grooming is that you can go into a shop, use professional equipment and products, and leave with a perfectly groomed dog — and no mess to clean up in your house.  That’s well worth the money for many do-it-yourselfers.

Of course, if you lack the skill to do certain things, such as clipping a poodle in a stylish fashion, you may opt for having the dog groomed by a professional.

Don’t forget to also look into any services that local dog rescues and shelters might offer.  Sometimes you can get grooming at a discount from these types of places, and benefit the rescue or shelter at the same time!

Researching Companies Online

Having been burned a few times by doing business with companies that I failed to research first like I should have, I am a huge proponent of researching companies online before doing business with them — either as a customer or as a service provider.

One of the most effective ways to research a company is to type their name into the search bar, along with “complaint” or “review.”  Some companies, you know right away to stay away from them, because of how many complaints pop up immediately in the search results.  Others you have to dig through the list a little bit in order to get any information, either good or bad.

Another way  is to search specific sites,  such as the Better Business Bureau.  However, I have to admit that I haven’t had much luck searching for businesses with the BBB, so I advise looking for other sites that provide consumer reviews.

Of course, chances are the Fiji hotel or scuba diving shop you are looking up probably won’t actually have any serious complaints against it — but it only takes once to get burned, so I think you are better safe than sorry.  Be sure that your Fiji diving vacation is one to remember — for the right reasons!

Beginning our Christmas Marketing

Though Christmas is far away for most people, for businesses in the retail sector, Christmas season has already started.  We have been preparing our displays and marketing materials for the last couple of weeks to make sure that we are ready for the busiest time of the year.

One of our challenges for this year is to increase our market share in the small city that we operate in.  There are just a couple of big box retailers and us, but last year our sales were down by a few percentage points.  The owner decided that this year needed to be different and we are going to be more aggressive in our marketing campaigns.

He has decided that if we buy mailing lists and send them a promotional coupon book that we will get more people to shop at our store.  We tried the same marketing tactic a couple of years ago with great results, so we are hoping to duplicate them this year.

We are in talks with a couple of companies that provide consumer mailing lists and we should find out in a couple of days which one we will be working with.  We should have all the marketing materials out by the end of the month and should start seeing the results of our efforts.

With any luck, this year will be better than last year and the store should enjoy a profitable Christmas season.

Know the Health Risks of your Business

healthEvery job that you can possibly do comes with health risks. You should learn what those are early on so that you can prevent yourself from as many job-related health problems as possible.

Some jobs come with obvious health risks. For example, let’s say that you do a job that requires you to work with strong chemicals. It’s obvious that there are risks related to this work. Learning how to properly handle those chemicals and to get proper ventilation helps you to prevent health problems in your job.

Other jobs have health risks that aren’t so obvious. For example, let’s say that you do Tampa search engine optimization. You’re working on the computer all day so you’re at risk of eye strain, back pain and carpal tunnel syndrome. It may not seem dangerous to work on the computer but it can be. Knowing the risks helps you to take actions that minimize them.

You shouldn’t get excessively paranoid about the health risks posed by your job. All jobs have these risks. But you should make yourself aware of what the common problems are in your line of work. Knowing them is the first step towards making sure they don’t affect you.

Learning the Language of a New Job

jobEvery job has its own language that you need to learn when you start working there. Sometimes this language is specific to the industry. Other times it is unique to the job position. Still other times it might be relevant only to the culture of the office where you work.

For example, if you started to work in a job that involved doing web hosting then you would need to learn the language of web hosting. When someone mentioned an SFTP file transfer, you would need to know that this is the same thing as an SSH file transfer. You would probably learn that these stand for “secure file transfer” and “secure shell” respectively. This is language unique to this industry and only really known by people involved in these types of jobs.

Now, let’s say that your company had a code name for each type of business that it did file transfers for (such as Alpha company). That’s a language unique to the job site itself. When you start to work there, you come in with knowledge about some of the language but you also have to pick up some of it on the job. A new job is a never-ending source of education.

Improving the End-of-Life Experience

The “Engage with Grace” project was created by Paul Levy, of the Running a Hospital blog, and Matthew Holt of The Health Care Blog:

We make choices throughout our lives – where we want to live, what types of activities will fill our days, with whom we spend our time. These choices are often a balance between our desires and our means, but at the end of the day, they are decisions made with intent. But when it comes to how we want to be treated at the end our lives, often we don’t express our intent or tell our loved ones about it.

This has real consequences. 73% of Americans would prefer to die at home, but up to 50% die in hospital. More than 80% of Californians say their loved ones “know exactly” or have a “good idea” of what their wishes would be if they were in a persistent coma, but only 50% say they’ve talked to them about their preferences.

But our end of life experiences are about a lot more than statistics. They’re about all of us. So the first thing we need to do is start talking.

Engage With Grace: The One Slide Project was designed with one simple goal: to help get the conversation about end of life experience started. The idea is simple: Create a tool to help get people talking. One Slide, with just five questions on it. Five questions designed to help get us talking with each other, with our loved ones, about our preferences. And we’re asking people to share this One Slide – wherever and whenever they can…at a presentation, at dinner, at their book club. Just One Slide, just five questions.

Lets start a global discussion that, until now, most of us haven’t had.

Here is what we are asking you: Download The One Slide and share it at any opportunity – with colleagues, family, friends. Think of the slide as currency and donate just two minutes whenever you can. Commit to being able to answer these five questions about end of life experience for yourself, and for your loved ones. Then commit to helping others do the same. Get this conversation started.

Let’s start a viral movement driven by the change we as individuals can effect…and the incredibly positive impact we could have collectively. Help ensure that all of us – and the people we care for – can end our lives in the same purposeful way we live them.

Just One Slide, just one goal. Think of the enormous difference we can make together.

Green Issues Keep Construction Local

greenConstruction companies have a lot of things that they have to worry about. They have to follow building laws. They have to know the labor laws. And they have to make sure that everything they build is in line with the modern green regulations that are in place today.

Most of the issues that construction workers face are the same from one location to another. However, there are some things that differ from place to place. Green regulations are often different from one state to another. That’s because different areas face different problems with the environment. It’s also because there is emphasis placed on different parts of green building. Some areas focus a lot on recycling of waste disposal whereas others are more interested in the energy-saving features of buildings.

Construction workers may always work on the same type of building but the rules may still be different in different parts of the U.S. For example, a company might specialize in building hotels. The green issues for building a Salt Lake City hotel can differ a lot from those that come up when building San Diego hotels.

These differences mean that it’s hard to move from one place to another if you’re in the construction business. Any time that you relocate, there are new rules to learn. It sure keeps you on your toes!

Dreamweaver extensions make you a better coder

If you’ve learned any sort of computer programming language, or web scripting, you understand that comprehension is sometimes a hit or miss venture. Like in college when you took algebra and got it one day, and had no clue the next, programming can be frustrating. It can also be promising and exciting as well.

Today, there are a number of excellent programs that help ease the burden of knowing everything. Macromedia makes a fantastic coding program called Dreamweaver. Over the past several years, they’ve made it even better by adding dreamweaver extensions that bring even more functionality into the core programs capability.

One of those extensions is the ability to allow Dreamweaver to effectively display and code PHP scripts. When you are coding in the PHP language, being able to clearly identify various bits and pieces of PHP speeds the process of development.

Additionally, if you spend any decent amount of time writing and working with engineering code, your eyes can get fatigued. This usually leads to a vast reduction of work and an increase in the number of real and potential errors. By having colored tags within your coded pages, you can easily spot certain coding conventions without having to actually see the individual text. This also makes for spotting errors as the expected color of a tag will not appear if you’ve coded incorrectly.
